A Perfect Blend Of Survival And Dungeon Crawling

About The Game

Len’s Island is an open world survival crafting game that can be played solo or with up to 7 other people. Len’s island does an amazing job at blending dungeon crawler and ARPG combat and a cosy farming game, you can take on quests solo or with friends, sails and build to your hearts content.

Getting Started

Upon starting we are giving the option to chose where our Len comes from giving him a little bit of back story to the game and obviously a bit of connection to ourselves because we created them. After choosing where your Len has come from the next task is to choose the hair, shirt and bottoms and boot? don’t be silly Len does not wear boots.

Once you have all that sorted you are introduced to the game by way of Text based cutscene and some pretty cool music, we learn of how the land is being taken over by some mysterious shadow and Len is going to save the Island.

Upon hitting shore we are met with a rather simple tutorial, it is very self explanatory and I do not think its possible to go wrong in act I or act ii for that matter. The tutorial will teach you how to combo hit so you deal more damage to environmental objects and enemies. build yourself a little shack, set a bed so you have somewhere to spawn and later down the line it will show you how to activate and open a dungeon.

Now this is all well and good but there are a few things the tutorial leaves out and that how to make healing items, how to farm, make a ship. I actually prefer not being hand held and figuring it out for myself but I am sure there are a few people that would rather just be told how its all done.

Combat and Skills

Lets start with the combat I actually started out quite enjoying the combat, I wouldn’t say the combat is bad but I feel like its missing something hits do not feel weighty enough and the skills feel a little lacking in places what Len’s Island currently has in place in terms of combat does the job and it does it well it just could do with a little polishing, something that adds a little weight to these attacks.

Combat aside each time you level up within the game you unlock a skill point and you can spend that to unlock things in the skill tree, now unlike most skill trees where you just go along every 15 levels or so in Len’s Island you can choose one of four locations to start from on the skill tree and then work your way around it from that location which I thought was quite a cool idea given the game is all about playing it your way, you wouldn’t want to spec into combat if your main focus is farming and vice versa.

Tables / Smithy’s

Tables such as workbenches and smithy’s such as refineries and anvils do not work like they normally would in other games similar to lens, they actually work better. Placing a table will give you the ability to exchange items to level up the table giving you access to more crafting items, but in Len’s Island you do not need to be near the crafting table to use the newly found items. Once unlocked all the items can be crafted on the fly now I am not sure if this was intentional or I’ve just give away the game however it seems to be intentional.

Farming

I did not actually do much farming because I am not the biggest person for it to be honest, however from what I can see in the crafting menus and farming shops around different towns it seems quite in depth. You can buy or build plots, grow seeds and plants, water them, sell the seeds or use the seeds to make potions and other bits. This gives the people that love farming a major role within the game.

Experience Points

This is what I absolutely love about Len’s Island it does not matter what you do weather your farming, woodcutting, smithing, fishing, building a house, fighting for your life, you will still get XP. This means that you can play the game however you want to play it and still level up your character and not fall behind because you did not join the team on that sweet dungeon run. It is this kind of mechanic that makes everyone on the team feel included.

Our Thoughts

Lens Island is one of them games you pick up at 9am, you blink and its 10pm. The game is very relaxing if you are not partaking in combat, the combat is ok once you get the hang of things I just wish the combat had a little more weight to it or a screen shake or something. Crafting within Lens is amazing, the building is flawless easy snap building however you could easily make some fancy builds with this system. Sailing around the map to find new locations is very rewarding and you can also build on them Islands too so your not locked to a little beach.

Overall we highly recommend Len’s Island and we will be playing a lot more of this game so expect further updates on the title.
